Humbaba had always lived within the sound of the ocean near the mouth of the river. His father had also lived in the village, but his mother had been won from an island near Boriquen. His father's father had also lived in the village, and he had taken Humbaba's grandmother from even further away, across the salty water infested with sharks.

"Where is the tranquil time of my fathers?" Humbaba asked, although no one could hear him within his hut of straw and sticks. "Where is the peace of my ancestors who sleep in the perennial earth? Where is my rest?"

Humbaba did not have the luxury of dying. There was no one to take his place. His son was no more. His daughter was no more. She could have borne him a grandson to take up the government of the people.
